Annotations

[edit | edit source]

Etymology: engage + -ment

engage : 1430, from MF engagier, from OF en gage "under pledge", from en "make" + gage "pledge", through Frankish from PGmc *wadiare "pledge" (showing the common evolution of Gmc. -w- to Fr. -g-). Specific sense of "promise to marry" first recorded 1727.

-ment: ME, from OF, from L -mentum, suffix forming nouns, usually from verbs
