Idea[edit | edit source]

IGEM is a synthetic biology (hour long video) or genetic engineering competition. The goal is to find a local IGEM team and begin participating in its meetings. The competition cycle starts in March and runs through November. Most team projects are a mix of electronic, software, and cell biology. Teams raise money for the entry fee which includes a bio brick in the winter. Teams can include students from a variety of schools. When this happens, teams split up, do their own thing, then combine their work or focus on what appears the most successful. The goal is not to create bacteria that make our arm pits smell better or lightening bugs that glow RGB much brighter. The goal can be to develop tools that make the whole process more affordable.
