<Ancient Mithila University

The court of King Janaka was the headquarter of the Ashramas and Gurukula of the Ancient Mithila University. The Ashramas and Gurukula were centers of learning where students would study the Vedas, the Upanishads, and other ancient texts.

The university taught various subjects, including literature, fine arts, science, Nyaya Shastra, and more. Nyaya Shastra was the core subject of the university.

The educational system of the Mithila University was very strict. According to historian John Keay, no one was allowed to copy the texts of the university to outside the university. One had to only remember the texts. The minimum period of studentship of this university was twelve years. After that, students could continue postgraduate studies and teaching.
