I was unable to find an article that had or I could access that talked about this so I asked Chat GPT and got some decent information. Phonographs were used to try and understand new/different languages or used to record stuff like music, religious teachings and stories. The most interesting conclusion in this was the fact that it was varied who used it depending on the colony and raises questions about representation and the possible exploitation it was used for.[1]
