The Nikon D850 is a professional full-frame DSLR made by Nikon.[1] As part of Nikon's 100th anniversary, they had announced the camera on July 25th, 2017.[2] The first shipment of the camera occurred in early September 2017. This camera is the successor to the Nikon D810, D810A, D800, and D800E.

This is Nikon's highest megapixel-count body to date, surpassing the D810. Alongside the Nikon D5 and D500, the D850 becomes Nikon's third DSLR camera with 4K video recording capabilities. The new 45.7 megapixel sensor is also Nikon's first back-side illuminated (BSI) sensor.

Features[edit | edit source]

Image Sensor[edit | edit source]

Nikon's newest D850 sports an FX-format 45.7 megapixel back-side illuminated CMOS image sensor with no optical low-pass filter[1] as an improvement to the older Nikon D810's 36.3 megapixel sensor.

Some reports say that the Nikon D850 has the same image quality as its predecessor, the D810, at double the ISO speed.[3]

Processor[edit | edit source]

Nikon added their EXPEED 5 image processor into the new D850, which is also in their flagship DX and FX models such as D500, D5, and D7500. This new processor sports improved performance over older EXPEED processors such as an increased JPEG and NEF (RAW) buffer sizes, lower noise at higher ISO speeds, autofocusing to -4EV, 4K video recording, and faster continuous shooting (with higher megapixel count).[4]

Buffer Sizes[5][edit | edit source]

  • 51 frames (14-bit NEF/RAW)
  • 170 frames (12-bit NEF/RAW)

ISO Range[5][edit | edit source]

  • 64-25,600 (32-102,400 in push/pull modes)

Screen & Live View[edit | edit source]

Lens servo modes[edit | edit source]

  • Autofocus (AF)
  • Single-servo AF (AF-S)
  • Full-time servo (AF-F)
  • Manual Focus (MF)

Live View AF-Area modes[edit | edit source]

  • Face-detection

  • Normal-area
  • Pinpoint
  • Subject-tracking

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • Almost every aspect of the D850's auto focusing system was inhertited from the Nikon D5, making the D850 a similar performer to the D5.[6]
  • The D850's 180k pixel metering system is also borrowed from the D5 and D500.[6]
  • Another borrowed piece from the Nikon D5 over to the D850 is its joystick which allows easier focus point selection over the use of the directional pad.[6]
  • Even before the official release of the D850 on September 8th, 2017, Nikon has reportedly sold out of their first batch via pre-orders.[7] Here is Nikon's official statement as translated by website Nikon Rumors:
