The Dodge Charger Daytona was built for winning Nascar races because of the failure the Dodge 500 even though it had a big hemi engine. Dodge was still losing the Nascar races to ford Chevy and mercury, so they had to think of a design of a car that could beat what ford Chevy and the other motor companies have so they came up with the 1969 Dodge Charger Daytona. With this car it dominated the track for a year and a half.
History
[edit | edit source]The Dodge Charger Daytona was made solely for winning Nascar Dodge was losing badly to Ford at Nascar. So they had to make a car that would wipe out the competition. The 1969 Dodge Charger Daytona was born not only it won its first race but won 7 out of 10 races the rest of the year. This car dominated the track for a year and a half it was so successful Nascar banned its design after that the Dodge charger daytona was killed off.
Design and Aerodynamics
[edit | edit source]The giant wing was made so that the tire of the Daytona could hug the ground giving it a lot of traction. More traction gave it grip on the ground so it could run at high speeds maintaining good control.Then the pointy nose made it so it could cut through the wind more easier.
Engine
[edit | edit source]There were 2 engines available for this car that is the 426 hemi 426 cu in 97.0) and the V8 440 MAGNUM 440 CU ( 7.2L) V8
Mechanics
[edit | edit source]One of people who worked on daytona was from Chrysler missile division named John pointer. He was a literal rocket scientist
Races
[edit | edit source]When they were building this car, they needed it to win Nascar races. It has it aerodynamic look to, so it can go through the track easily. The giant wings the nose was all added, so it can cut through the wind and reduce drag force. The rear wing was made so it could hug the ground and not lose traction, better stability. It was the first car to turn a lap faster than 200 miles per hour. When the dodge charger Daytona was debuting the current tire technology time couldn’t handle the speed of these tires goodyear and firestone announced they couldn’t supply tires capable of running the speeds. The racers voiced their concerns and asked if the race could be postponed but it was denied. This was 1969 September 14, at the inaugural Talladega 500 race way. The race still continued as is and the Dodge charger Daytona won its first race on its debut day.

[edit | edit source]Buddy Baker in the # 88 he drove it going over 200 miles during a turn he won 6 races later that year
Second Generation
[edit | edit source]The Dodge Charger Daytona got brought back in 2006 it said hemi had a cutout that said Daytona with a custom spoiler. The wheels were stock 18 inch R/T rims nothing really changed performance wise from the other dodge chargers at the time besides look.
