Refik Anadol
Turkish born American artist Refik Andol known for his work of art with the help of artificial intelligence. His engaging ways of implementing artificial intelligence in art, such as machine learning and advanced data visualization that engage audiences in such immersive ways that people find it very interesting which gained popularity. Anadol transforms complex datasets into stunning visual narratives, allowing viewers to engage with information in fresh and meaningful ways.
He is best known for works like “Archive Dreaming,” which utilizes machine learning which analyzes different collections of visual data, creating an immersive experience with audio visual experience that explores memory and time. “Infinity Room.” Infinite room combines projection mapping with mirrors that make the illusion of infinite space in his work. “Melting Memories” which focuses on fading the memories through gradual fading of human memories through a natural network which creates stunning visuals that make people think about the way we remember and makes nostalgia.
While art-focused immersive experiences with projection mapping and custom sound designs maybe common today, but they were quite rare in 2015 when Anadol introduced Infinity Room at the Istanbul Biennial. This work featured a mirrored room where he projected shifting black-and-white abstract landscapes which was quite impressive. Anadol aimed to enhance visitors' physical awareness by immersing them in a surreal, non-physical environment. Many participants even reported feeling as if they were floating in zero gravity. Since then, Infinity Room has captivated over two million people at various venues across the U.S., including San Francisco’s Exploratorium, the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art, and Washington D.C.’s Artechouse.
Education
Anadol’s family originates from Istanbul, Turkey. He later immigrated to the US in 2011 and pursued his education at the University of California, Los Angeles, where he earned a Master of Fine Arts degree. Currently, he is a professor in UCLA’s Department of Design Media Arts, where he shares his expertise in the department of arts and technology with the next generation of artists and designers.
Notable Works
Refik Anadol Studio is leading an exciting project called the Large Nature Model (LNM). This is a special open-source AI model focused on nature, built using the largest ethically sourced dataset of natural elements. The LNM can understand and create content in different types of media, including text, images, audio, and video, making it a versatile tool for exploring and representing the natural world.
Refik Anadol Studio's research with AI focuses on creating interactive experiences using real-time technology, scents, and other sensory elements. In this project, AI helps imagine fully interactive 3D worlds that are then brought to life by 3D artists. Viewers can explore these worlds and navigate through millions of raw datasets, like how machines recognize bird sounds or images from nature. While exploring, audiences can also talk to or type messages to an AI character that responds using advanced language models.
Refik Anadol and his team created a unique exhibition called AI Data Paintings by training an AI model using public metadata from The Museum of Modern Art’s collection, which includes over 200 years of art. The series, titled Generative Study, showcases Anadol’s work with GAN algorithms, blending technology and art. Each piece in the series features clusters of selected “latent space sequences,” allowing the artist to explore unexpected connections to modern visual styles through the AI's perspective.
In an era of rising concerns about the role of artificial intelligence in society, Refik Anadol embraces the power of machines. Anadol identifies as a painter and has spent much of the past decade using data as his medium and algorithms as his artistic tools. While his work may not alleviate our technological concerns, it often results in colossal, mesmerizing pieces that provoke deep thought and reflection among us.
In partnership with the City of Seoul, South Korea, Anadol's studio gathered millions of personal stories through photographs and historical images of the Dongdaemun area. Using machine learning, Anadol connected these stories and projected the results onto the stunning building designed by Zaha Hadid Architects.
Awards
Refik Anadol’s global projects have gained numerous awards and accolades, including the Lorenzo il Magnifico Lifetime Achievement Award for New Media Art, Microsoft Research’s Best Vision Award, and the iF Gold Award. He has also received the D&AD Pencil Award, the German Design Award, and the UCLA Art+Architecture Moss Award. Additionally, Anadol was honored with Columbia University’s Breakthrough in Storytelling Award, the University of California Institute for Research in the Arts Award, the SEGD Global Design Award, and Google’s Artists and Machine Intelligence Artist Residency Award.
