DJ SCREW
[edit | edit source]Robert Earl Davis Jr. (July 20 1971-November 16 2000) mostly known a DJ Screw was an American hip-hop DJ based in Smithville, Texas and is the creator of the now-famous chopped and screwed technique. He has influence the hip-hop community in Houston and was the leader of the screwed up click. Robert released over 200 mixtapes in his lifetime; becoming an icon in his regional level until his overdose of codeine in 2000. His impact on hip-hop music can be still felt to this day.
Early Life
[edit | edit source]Robert Earl Davis Jr was born July 20, 1971 in Smithville, Texas. His father, Robert Sr was a long-haul truck driver and his mother Ida May Deary would move Robert Jr back and forth from Los Angeles and Houston in his early life. Robert seeing the hit movie Breakin in 1984 would inspire him to go into music. His musical interest shifted as he took his mother B.B King and Johnnie Taylor records and scratched them on the turntable the ways DJs did, slowing the spinning disc and then allowing it to speed back up, playing with sound. Robert began to buy records of his own and would spin with his friend Trey Adkins, who would rap. Davis had a jambox and he connected with two turntables to it and made a fader out of the radio tuner so he could DJ. If he didn’t like a record, he would deface it with a screw. One day Adkins asked him “who do you think you are, DJ Screw?’’ The named stuck ever since, and Davis give Adkins the name shorty Mac.
Career
[edit | edit source]Davis began DJing at the age of 12 in 1983, but started his trademark slowed-down mixes in 1990 and started making impacts throughout the nineties. His mixes became more and more popular as time moved on. At one point, customers had increasingly requested his mixes over personalized mix. He would form the coalition of emcees called Screwed up click. He would started own his own business and opened a shop up on 7717 Cullen Blvd in Houston, Texas called screwed up records and tapes. The store would sell merchandise and mixtapes.
Death
[edit | edit source]On November 16, 2000 Davis was found dead inside his Houston recording studio in the 8100 block of commerce park Drive. The corners discovered his cause of death was a codeine overdose. He died at the age of 29 and was buried in hometown Smithville.
