The term base is used to describe the concept of keeping an advantangeous position from which one can gain leverage from the ground. A good description of it is that base involves one being in a position from which he can effectively deliver or absorb force with an opponent.

The fighter should be sitting in base. His feet should be together to protect against ankle locks, his dominant arm should be posted behind him, and his non-dominant arm should be in front to defend against attacks.

Step 2[edit | edit source]

Stand up in base, step 2

To stand up, the fighter should lift up his hips, keeping his weight on his posted non-dominant leg and posted dominant arm, and swing his dominant leg to post back behind his posted dominant arm.
