Tests of the Functional School

The functional school has defined its tests in terms of discrete functions that the simulation must perform to meet the standard. The reason this is incompatible with the phenomenal systems, is the fact that it is extremely difficult to prove a discrete function in a system where you cannot factor a function out. The most definite set of such tests can be found in the work of Bernard J. Baars.

The best Demonstration of Functional Consciousness is Franklins IDA/LIDA architecture which has:

  • Constraint Satisfaction
  • Deliberation
  • Negotiation
  • Problem Solving
  • Expectation/Automation
  • Perception
  • Working Memory
  • Episodic Memory
  • Emotions
  • Metacognition
