18th century European scholarly societies and academies/Society of civil engineers
Summary[edit | edit source]
Society Name: Society of Civil Engineers
Active Dates: 1771-present
The society was founded by a group of engineers who dined together. They did this in order to better aquaint themselves to avoid any possible hostility when dealing with each other in a public setting. After the death of one of its founders, Smeaton, in 1793 the group renewed itself. With its renewal came a new goal to promote and communicate advances in engineering to all public and private civil engineers.
