The society was made up of intellectuals from the two nearby colleges, King's and Marischal. A tightly knit group whose discussions centered on the Enlightenment thought of the 18th century. The original members were Thomas Reid, John Gregory, David Skene, George Campbell, John Stewart, Robert Traill and James Olgivie, Lord Deskford.
