This tune was written by Lowell Mason in 1831 and since them many hymn texts have been applied to it. The tune is has an uncommon meter of 6.6.4.6.6.6.4. An example of the audio can be found at Hymary.org with more information and texts the tune has been used for.

Lowell Mason is the composer of many well known hymn tunes, a few to note are Joy to the World and Mary Had a Little Lamb. He is considered the first important music educator in the United States. Cyberhymnal has included more information about Lowell Mason along with his background and education.
