The user name you choose for yourself is not set in stone. On request, Bureaucrats can change user account settings and article histories such that all previous edits of a given user are attributed to the new name. Currently, only users with fewer than 5000 edits (edit counter) can be renamed. You can only be renamed to an account that does not exist.

  1. To change your user name on the English Wikiversity only, please make your request on this page.
  2. To change your user name on another Wikimedia project that has a local bureaucrat (see Special:Listusers on your wiki to check), please ask one of those bureaucrats.
  3. To change your user name on another Wikimedia project that has no local bureaucrat, please ask a steward at meta:requests for permission.
  4. Re-attribution of edits from an anonymous account to a username can not be carried out by bureaucrats.

[edit] Change your signature

Instead of changing your name, you can change your preferences to change your signature. This will change your "public appearance" on talk pages without requiring costly changes to the database.

  • All your edits will be attributed to the same user. Although it will be your Username and not your sig that appears in page histories, most public interaction here goes on via talk pages.
  • If you have the desire and the patience, you can use "What links here" from your User: page to manually edit all your old signatures to use the new sig as well (probably not necessary in most cases).

[edit] Create a new account

You can simply create a new account with the desired name, and redirect your old User: and User Talk: pages to your new account.

  • Put a note at the top of your new User: and User Talk: page to explain the change.
  • This does not merge your contributions history; but anyone investigating the old edits will be redirected to your new one.
  • Again, if you have the patience, you can use "What links here" from your old User: page to manually edit all your old talk page signatures to display the new sig as well, using a piped link of the form [[User:OldUserName|NewSig]]. Use an informative edit summary so that people do not think you are tampering with someone else's entry on a talk page (a definite community no-no).

Please follow the procedure carefully or your request will not be fulfilled.

NOTE: You must not create the new account yet for this process to work. If the target username exists, the rename process will fail.


  1. Check you have fewer than 5000 edits (edit counter).
  2. Check the new name you want does not exist (Special:Listusers)
  3. Sign in with the account that you want renamed.
  4. Add your request in the section below.
  5. If you are a sysop, please note this fact with your request so that the necessary changes can be made.
  6. Once your request is dealt with, all edits from your old account will be reattributed to your new account.
  7. You should check that the old account has been recreated and blocked to prevent someone else creating the account and impersonating you.
  8. You will probably want to move and redirect your userpage and talk page after changing.

Hi, moved up from usurpation to here - did you write the wished name correct ? That account doesn't exist in any wikimedia project.
So you could also just create that wished account new if you like (or doesn't the software allow this because it is a too similar name ?) ----Erkan Yilmaz uses the Wikiversity:Chat (try) 21:37, 17 July 2008 (UTC)

Hi! would you please change the user name " Unknown001" to " ;Hiba;1 ". Note: I have already created an account named " ;Hiba;1 ". When googling my name, the first thing to appear is my user page in wikipedia and other pages I have edited, effectively putting relevant information about me and publications lower in google.   • Current name:User:BewareofDoug
  • Target name: User:Doug
  • Reason: SUL; analysis of global account: [1] (many other projects are merged but I have made no contributions to them).
  • Home wiki: enwiki where I'm an admin
  • Additional information: The target has edits but the last edit is in mid-2006, the same user is User:Reswik whose account has is also inactive, the last edits by Reswik on this and enwiki both being in mid-2007. I have e-mailed the user on both Wikiversity and enwiki and posted to his talk page on enwiki. I wondered, if the target account does not respond, can he be renamed to User:Doug (old) or User:Doug (usurped) or something like that as is done on other projects?

  • BTW, I have pending usurp requests on all of the projects that I don't have merged yet: Wikiversity, Wikibooks (also Reswik), wikiquote, ja.wikipedia, ko.wikipedia, and es.wikipedia; excepting it.wikipedia as there is an active User:Doug there who is apparently unconnected to Reswik (doesn't speak English fluently and makes no interwiki links on his user page).--BewareofDoug 18:13, 2 December 2008 (UTC)

Pictogram voting comment.svg Comment - There is reluctance to usurp accounts that have had significant edits. See: "I didn't do yours because the account had edits." Also, there seems to be some general confusion about the use of {{Usurpation requested}} which literally states "...because you have not used it to edit..." See the discussion thread that I opened at Wikiversity_talk:Changing_username#Usurpation to request community input on this process. Also, see the change that I made to the template to try to clarify the intent. I would hesitate to usurp an account with contribs unless there is some indication that Doug switched to using the Reswik account, for example. Yes, I have e-mailed User:Doug on this Project and User:Reswik on both this and enwiki and I've posted messages on enwiki as well for Reswik (See w:User talk:Reswik#Trying to reach you); all done last December; I did not bother to post a message on User talk:Reswik on this project. As I noted above, User:Reswik has been inactive as well since mid-2007 on both this Project and enwiki, and does not appear to be active anywhere else (Last edit by Reswik anywhere was August 2007 on here[3]). None of Doug's edits on this project were in the mainspace, for what it's worth.--BewareofDoug 21:17, 30 August 2009 (UTC)

[edit] SUL Request: Crackerjack

I'm trying to obtain the username "Crackerjack" for SUL. So far I have claimed it on en., sv., and commons. There are still (apparently unused) accounts on ja, wikitionary, and wikiversity. Can the current User:Crackerjack on Wikitionary be moved out of the way? Authenticated note on my EN talk page is here.
