Challenge: There is currently a severe oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico that will affect wild life and business in the area. Task: Identify a gene that will degrade oil faster. The gene is to be inserted into a plasmid of an aquatic bacterial species such as Pelagibacter (The most abundant bacterial species in the ocean). The resulting recombinant bacteria having a new gene should accelerate the breakdown of oil on water and affected beaches. Adopt a protocol to isolate and insert a gene from Pseudomonas into Pelagibacter. Assess your contribution to reduce environmental damage from oil spill.
