Too Much Detail on Numeral Systems?[edit source]

I'm not arguing the usefulness of the material on this page, nor it's accuracy, but I do question the appropriateness of going into so much detail on number conversions. This "course" is supposed to be for people that really know nothing about computers so it seems like an awful lot to throw at them. I definitely think it is worth pointing out the importance of why binary numbers are used as well as the usefulness of hexadecimal numbers in abbreviating raw data. Hmm, I tend to agree. I'm a computer science major and the introduction even made me do a double-take. I didn't learn this kind of stuff until my first year of computer science, and I took about 3 general computer classes before that.Tastywheat (discusscontribs) 03:36, 19 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
With the assumption that the audience is global, let me bring up couple of points for discussion. This topic is taught at 6th grade level Maths with no hint of Computer Science directly as a part of the curriculum in some countries. Having brought that up in terms of the level at which it could be taught, a question could be raised - is it relevant for someone learning about computers at the introductory level? I would say it is relevant as a computer does a lot of conversions and this knowledge is useful in following some concepts. However I would agree with your points on the 'details' part. My own doubt is to whether to turn this into an appendix with the details preserved or keep it as one of the main chapters in this first course about computers. --CSinSchools (discusscontribs) 12:08, 2 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
