Overall[edit source]

  1. Overall, this is a reasonably well-prepared chapter which describes the emotional effects of massage. A key contribution of the chapter is the identification of research about massage and physical and psychological effects. The main area for improvement is in the quality of written expression, particularly with regard to grammar.

Theory[edit source]

  1. This is a difficult topic to cover from a psychological theory point of view (given that it is not generally well covered by Western psychology), but the chapter does a reasonably good job of at least sketching out and pointing to some useful conceptual considerations about how massage can release tension, including acknowledging the role of positive, self-fulfulling expectations.
  2. Self-massage could be considered more broadly (than yoga), as a section, especially given the self-help theme of the book - e.g., some self-help tips here: http://www.rd.com/content/learn-the-art-of-self-massage

Research[edit source]

  1. The chapter incorporates the results of several interesting and relevant studies.
  2. More discussion of effect sizes would be useful.

Written expression[edit source]

  1. Written expression was satisfactory, but there were numerous grammatical errors - I correct many and tagged some with {{grammar}}.
  2. Image 1 doesn't indicate the type of massage?
  3. Some restructuring could be considered e.g., to bring the two sections on yoga together
  4. Links to yoga and smell and emotion chapters are well incorporated into the chapter. More links to relevant Wikipedia articles on key related topics would also be helpful.
  5. Limited use of images and no additional learning features are provided.
  6. A reasonable conclusion is offered. What other self-help tips could be considered?
