At the Duchess of Devonshire's fancy-dress ball, Violet, Countess of Powis was dressed as Lady Herbert of Cherbury in the Queen Elizabeth procession.[5]

  • The Gentlewoman says, "Lady Powis, as Marie Stuart, [was] very successfully gowned"[6]:32, Col. 3b and "looked very effective."[6]:32, Col. 3c
  • "The COUNTESS OF POWIS, as Marie Stuart, wore a white satin dress, the front of bodice and panel in front of the skirt covered with steel, diamond, and pearl embroidery, and bordered with ermine; the wide sleeves of white satin were trimmed with / ermine, and there was a large Stuart collar of yellow guipure, spangled and embroidered with pearls. The yellow guipure headdress, coming to a point on the forehead, was embroidered with pearls and diamonds, and bordered with a double row of large white pearls."[7]:Col. 2a–b
