Algernon Hawkins Thomond Keith-Falconer, 9th Earl of Kintore (at 607) and Sydney, Countess Kintore (at 608) attended the Duchess of Devonshire's fancy-dress ball.[4]:p. 12, Col. 4b Lady Hilda Madeleine Keith-Falconer (at 677) was also present. Lady Hilda Keith-Falconer and Sydney, Countess Kintore had their portraits taken by Bassano, not by Lafayette at the ball.

Alexander Bassano's portrait of "Sydney Charlotte Keith-Falconer (née Montagu), Countess of Kintore as Jane, Duchess of Gordon; Lady Hilda Madeline Keith-Falconer" in costume is photogravure #200 in the album presented to the Duchess of Devonshire and now in the National Portrait Gallery.[5] The printing on the portrait says, "The Countess of Kintore as Jane, Duchess of Gordon (Lady Hilda Madeline Keith-Falconer with her)," with a Long S in Countess and Duchess.[6]

Jane, Duchess of Gordon (1748 or 1749 – 14 April 1812) was married to Alexander, 4th Duke of Gordon and was a socially important Tory hostess, both in Edinburgh and London.[7] She was a patron for Robert Burns.[7] Published in the 1849 Sketches of the Royal Society and Royal Society Club, this engraving (right) by W. Read is one of a number of engravings of this portrait.[8] The original is by Joshua Reynolds, as the engraving says, but many copies of that painting seem to have been made, both in oils and as an engraving. A copy of that painting that Sydney, Countess of Kintore could conceivably have seen, by Henry Raeburn (1756–1823), is owned now by the National Trust of Scotland, Fyvie Castle.[9] The dress worn by the Duchess of Gordon in the engraving and thus the Reynolds portrait appears to be the original for Sydney, Countess of Kintore's costume.

Lady Hilda Keith Falconer[edit | edit source]

Alexander Bassano's portrait of "Lady Hilda Madeline Keith-Falconer as Lady Susan Gordon, afterwards Duchess of Manchester" in costume is photogravure #204 in the album presented to the Duchess of Devonshire and now in the National Portrait Gallery.[5] The printing on the portrait says, "Lady Hilda Keith Falconer as Lady Susan Gordon afterwards Duchess of Manchester," with a Long S in Duchess.[10]

Lady Hilda Keith Falconer was the 2nd daughter of the Earl and Countess Kintore. Her older sister, Ethel Sydney Keith-Falconer married 16 February 1905.[11] It is not clear why she was not at the ball, if she was not. Lady Hilda Keith-Falconer was not married either at the time of the ball and in fact never married.[12]

Lady Hilda Keith Falconer is in the Album twice. Lady Susan Gordon was the daughter of Jane, Duchess of Gordon, and she did marry William Montagu, 5th Duke of Manchester.[13] Lady Hilda Keith-Falconer's mother, Sydney, Countess of Kintore, was the daughter of the 6th Duke of Manchester.[3]
