Ionic bonding occurs when a metal (cation) transfers electrons to a non-metal (anion). This transfer of electrons causes emotional bitching electrostatic attraction, the receiving element has a negative charge, and the transferring element a positive charge. The elements, now having opposite charges, are attracted to each other, thus forming an ionic bond. Some examples of compounds with ionic bonds are NaCl (table salt), and CaCO3 (Calcium Carbonate).
