Narrative Theory and Television[edit | edit source]

Narrative Theory:

Narrative Theory is the study of story in its many forms. They are studied through this narrative lens so we can better understand how they work/communicate meaning and how they shape our understanding of the world as a whole.

Question:

How did the introduction of television impact the construction of visual narratives in late 20th-century America?

Answer:

ChatGPT gave me the obvious answer to this question, that this new use of visual narratives shaped cultural perceptions, communications, and entertainment. This of course altered the way said stories were presented and consumed. I did want it to tell me more about how it shaped cultural perceptions, so I asked for more clarification. it then told me about how what was shown on tv was a fanaticized version of real life. Containing diverse characters and societal norms and values. It then told me how tv challenged stereotypes of the time, fostering the acceptance of minorities and offering insights.

My Reflection:

I feel that using an AI like this to get information is a valuably but risky tool. At time ChatGPT can give you insightful information, but you can never know if its fully true without probing it. It is designed to give you the quickest answer to the any question you ask so it may take shortcuts. As far as this assignment goes, I feel that it was a useful source of information. being able to hold a conversation with something can help you to gather your thoughts and receive clarification on any concerns or questions you have. I found its answers to this question in particular to be self-explanatory, but being able to actually probe and dig for more information to any degree you wish makes using ChatGPT in this environment a useful tool.
