A tracking category is one intended to build and maintain a list of pages primarily for the sake of the list itself, allowing one to check that, but is not inherently useful within a categorization scheme. Such categories are used to track syntaxes that may be deprecated in the future, maintain a list of pages that may need to be mass-edited later, or aggregate the members of several sub-categories by other classifications into one larger list, et cetera.
