A brief list of the similarities and differences between Non-profit organizations and Businesses for profit:

Similarities

  • Board of Directors
  • Both are legal entities
  • Tax responsibilities
  • Compensation of certain participants
  • Efficiency- budget, resource mgmt, etc.
  • Competition- funding, recognition, etc.
  • Constituents- B: shareholders, employees

NP: employees, donors, constituents

  • Loans
  • Deliverables- goods/services, grants

Can be of varying size (from very small to very large)

Differences

  • Distribution- B: distribute among shareholders

NP: reinvest profits in programs

  • B: Liquidation --> owners

NP: Liquidation --> beneficiaries

  • Taxes- B: taxable NP: tax exempt 501 (political), 501(c3)(non-political)
  • B: interns NP: volunteers
  • Social expectations of compensation varies

Is this project still active? Apart from a collection of external links and almost advertising-like descriptions of some companies, I find almost nothing on these Wikiversity pages that increases my knowledge in conservation entrepreneurship.
