The Deutsch Gesellschaft was created in 1697 to further the importance of the German language and sought to be like the Académie Française which held the same ideals but in France instead of Germany. The Gesellschaft has been known by three different names Görlitzische Poetische Gesellschaft, Teutschübende Poetische Gesellschaft, and finally Deutsche Gesellschaft. The Deutsche Gesellschaft existed on its own until 1827 when it merged with an academy named Verein zur Erforschung vaterländischer Geschichte und Alterthümer and the combination of the two was to be named Deutsche Gesellschaft zur Erforschung vaterländischer Sprache und Alterthümer.
