Allemann, L. and Young B.W. 1998. Vegetable Production in KwaZulu-Natal: Tomato. KwaZulu-Natal Department of Agriculture. Republic of South Africa, Pietermaritzburg. PDF
The tomato Lycopersicon esculentum is probably the third most widely grown vegetable crop in KwaZulu-Natal. Most of the fruit is sold fresh and used as a fresh salad vegetable, or as an ingredient in soups, stews, sauces and other dishes. This is a warm-season crop that does not tolerate frost. Long periods of wet weather make disease control difficult; in KwaZulu-Natal, tomato production is most profitable under irrigation in relatively dry areas. Production details discussed include environmental requirements, cultivar choice, cultural aspects, fertilisation, irrigation, weed control, pest and disease management, harvesting, and marketing.
