The tomato Lycopersicon esculentum is probably the third most widely grown vegetable crop in KwaZulu-Natal. Most of the fruit is sold fresh and used as a fresh salad vegetable, or as an ingredient in soups, stews, sauces and other dishes. This is a warm-season crop that does not tolerate frost. Long periods of wet weather make disease control difficult; in KwaZulu-Natal, tomato production is most profitable under irrigation in relatively dry areas.
