ENES 100 - Introduction to Engineering

Introduction

Hello, my name is Muhammad Ali Yousuf and I'll be teaching "Introduction to Engineering" as an adjunct, together with other professors including:

  1. Scott
  2. John
  3. Mark
  4. Michael
  5. Jey
  6. Cheryl, and
  7. Brian.

My main area of research interest is Medical Device Design which is an application of Mechatronic Design.

The Course

Weekly Plan for Fall 2014

Students

Section 502 Project 0 - Printers
Student WikiID 502-Project 0 Current Task
Chaput, Melissa A. [HCC Group 4] Workcentre XD130df xerox Research and disassembling a printer
[Jonathan D.] Group 1 Brother MFC-5980CN Printer Disassemble printer and Identify parts
Fleri, Salvatore G. HP Photosmart C6200 All-in-One Printer Research About Printer
Guillaume, Ruggieri Group #2. HP Photosmart printer C6200 We took the printer serial number, we look it up online in order to know which tools is required to take it apart. And we also take pictures of different angles of the printer.
Hotz, Gabrielle E. [HCC Group 4] Disassemble printer
Lamin, Abu Group #3 We first research parts of the printer and how they work.I found that HHc has a software called Open SCAD which is a softwarw that allows you to make 3D software. It a software that focus more on CAD spects than on the artistic aspect. In other word it more useful for someone who is making 3D model rather than someone who wants to make a animated movie
Leggs, Brian E.
Medina, Stephen F. [HCC Group 4] Take apart printer and analyze the parts.
Messiha, John Group 1 Brother MFC-5980CN Disassembling and identifying all parts of a printer
Minnick, Nathan W. Group #3 hp LaserJet 4100dtn printer Assist other group members in disassembling the printer and identify the components.
Murhutta, Robin K. [HCC Group 4] Xerox WorkCentre130df conclude printer breakdown. picture/video taking and finishing documentation.
Patel, Shivam Group #1 Printer: Brother MFC 5980CN

Helping my group disassembling the printer and identifying the parts and saving them for the future projects.

Utsav Patel Group #3 Assist other group members in the deconstruction of the printer and documentation of the task
Spade, Brodie Group #3 Record video and photograph the deconstruction of the printer in order to document this process.
Staggers, Michael J. Group #1 Disassembling Brother MFC-5890CN and identifying the parts.
Zaidi, Mohammed J. Group 2 Disassemble a HP Photosmart C6200 All-in-One series

Projects

Top Five Choices for 2014

In sections below you will find many project but here I am trying to provide top five choices for you. These are not in order of importance or difficulty:

  1. A electro-mechanical model of the lung with breathing simulation [What will you need to learn? Mechanical: Yes, Electronics: Yes, Programming: No]
  2. FlexVolt - An EMG Sensor For Physical Therapy and Biohacking [What will you need to learn? Mechanical: No, Electronics: Yes, Programming: Yes]
  3. Biomedical Sensor Applications with Arduino [What will you need to learn? Mechanical: No, Electronics: Yes, Programming: Yes]
  4. Arduino based Tic-Tac-Toe Single Player. See this for a simpler design: Arduino based Tic-Tac-Toe. Here is another design [What will you need to learn? Mechanical: No, Electronics: Yes, Programming: Yes]
  5. Build an arduino based robot with multiple behaviors. See for example, Building a Simple Arduino Robot [What will you need to learn? Mechanical: Yes, Electronics: Yes, Programming: Yes]

In addition to the above projects, if you have your own ideas, discuss with me during class time.

Biomedical Engineering Projects

  • An electro-mechanical model of Gallbladder [What will you need to learn? Mechanical: Yes, Electronics: Yes, Programming: No]
  • An electro-mechanical model of the lung [What will you need to learn? Mechanical: Yes, Electronics: Yes, Programming: No]
  • A electro-mechanical model of the lung with breathing simulation [What will you need to learn? Mechanical: Yes, Electronics: Yes, Programming: No]
  • A electro-mechanical model of the lung that replicates YOUR breathing pattern [What will you need to learn? Mechanical: Yes, Electronics: Yes, Programming: probably yes]
  • A (purely mechanical) 3D model of the lung as seen in a CT scan using wire mesh [What will you need to learn? Mechanical: Yes, Electronics: No, Programming: No]
  • DIY Blood Pressure Monitor (advanced) [What will you need to learn? Mechanical: Yes, Electronics: Yes, Programming: Yes]

Arduino based Biomedical Projects

Robotics Projects

Miscellaneous Projects

  • Cloud Starter - This bundle includes the new cloudBit plus 5 other favorite prototyping modules; everything you need to create internet-connected devices in seconds. Recreate the most popular smart devices, use littleBits to prototype the next billion dollar idea, or invent a project that solves your own, unique problem.
  • Intelligent window (two Polaroid glasses change relative angle to maintain a constant light inside the room with varying outside light.
  • Arduino project ideas
  • For more project ideas, see Tech Briefs - Create the Future Design Contest
