Unix Data Manipulation - Introduction

Who is this course for?[edit | edit source]

This course is for anyone who sometimes needs to manipulate Unix data files – that is to say files in plain text format – without needing all the power of a spreadsheet or database. It is for someone who does not necessarily know much Unix but is comfortable with typing less at the command line to view file and moving around with cd, maybe piping grep to less to see just some lines of a file. For some elements of the course it will be an advantage to know some programming but not much: everything we do can be explained.

Why do this course?[edit | edit source]

Besides learning that you can do quite a lot of useful data cleansing, manipulation and simple reporting from the command line, this course will improve your general confidence in using Unix. I refer below to two text files which can be downloaded from the ISD training resources website.
