[edit] Four purposes

Research can be conceptualised as exhibiting one or more of the following four purposes:

  1. Exploratory: e.g., discovering, uncovering, exploring
  2. Descriptive: e.g., summarising, gathering info, mapping
  3. Explanatory: e.g., testing and understanding causal relations
  4. Predictive: e.g., predict what might happen in various scenarios

These quiz questions provide some practical examples of research studies and their purpose.
