History[edit | edit source]

Pirates don't clean their teeth is a children story aimed at 3-6 year olds.

Written in 2001, as a bed time story for his son Ben, Pirates follows the story of Ben as he plays make believe pirate adventures through the house.

He is joined on his adventures by a group of cuddly toys, who soon join Ben as part of his motley crew. These are based on real toys that still live with Ben today.

Pirates has taken a long time to turn into a real story - initially sold as a stand alone Ebay story - The futility of this was soon realised, and Adrian set off to find a publisher.

The first round of publishing submissions resulted in a series of rejection letters, and also one a commission from Allegra Publishing.[1]

The commissioned series - The Entertainers - never actually saw the light of day. The only book completed was Joko the Juggler.

Pirates then entered a period of quiet reflection, and mainly lived in a draw in a study.

However, a chance conversation brought Adrian into contact with Chris Scotcher, who took up the illustration work as part of his academic project work.

This collaboration bought together the work that now exists as Pirates Don't clean their teeth which is due for release in November 2009.

Pirates has received positive initial reviews - and Sarah Jane Honeywellw:Sarah-Jane_Honeywell, has given a positive quote for the work which can be found on the promotional website.[2]
