DescriptionHands-on learning - students use trigonometry.jpg
English: Students at a high school on the outskirts of Vientiane, Laos, measure the angle from yellow line on the table, to a post some distance away. From that, using the tangent function, they’ll calculate the distance to the post, and then they'll measure the distance to check their accuracy.
This trigonometry experiment is one of many hands-on activities offered at "Discovery Days" which Big Brother Mouse, a literacy project in Laos, sponsors at schools and youth centers. Non-rote, interactive educational opportunities are rare in Laos. The Discovery Days include anatomy models, fossil and mineral collections, electronic experiments, microscopes, and number games.
