Illich talks about this a bit in Deschooling Society, here in Chapter 6: Learning Webs under the section called Reference Services to Educational Objects. He is referring to access to the workings of objects and states at the end of the section, "A truly public kind of ownership might begin to emerge if private or corporate control over the educational aspect of "things" were brought to the vanishing point." Nice. sounds like communism.... .but.... hmm............. what about research? how could research still be encouraged? what would motivate individuals to innovate? what would encourage and reward the discovery of new knowledge? Jack
