Turmeric as a natural indicator[edit | edit source]

Definition of an indicator[edit | edit source]

The substance which is used to test whether the given substance is acidic or basic in nature is called an indicator.A type of indicators which are found naturally are called natural indicators.

Examples of an indicator[edit | edit source]

Turmeric, China rose petals, litmus, red cabbage etc.

Acids[edit | edit source]

vinegar (acetic acid)

Orange, lemons (citric acid)

Curd (lactic acid)

Grapes, Tamarind (tartaric acid)

Bases[edit | edit source]

soap solution

Baking soda

Tooth paste

Lime water

The effect of turmeric indicator on acidic and basic solution[edit | edit source]

Turmeric paper (yellow colour) turns into red when it is dipped into basic solution. And it does not change its colour with acid.

Effect on China Rose[edit | edit source]

We can use China rose petals (pink colour) as an indicator which turns acidic solutions to dark pink and basic solutions to green.
