At the Duchess of Devonshire’s 1897 Duchess of Devonshire's fancy-dress ball, Edith Glyn, Baroness Wolverton was dressed as Britannia[4]:p. 7, Col. 4c; she walked in the Duchess procession.

Lafayette's portrait (left) of "Edith Amelia (née Ward), Lady Wolverton as Britannia" in costume is photogravure #282 in the album presented to the Duchess of Devonshire and now in the National Portrait Gallery.[5] The printing on the portrait says, "Lady Wolverton as Britannia."[6]

Lady Wolverton's costume and pose may reflect the way Britannia is represented on this reverse of an 1841 half-penny (right).
