What is sobriquet?[edit source]

A sobriquet is a fancy name - just like a nickname. Sobriquet is well unified one and well known to the world. In Telugu it is (ముద్దు పేరు). (ప్రపంచానికి తెలిసుoడాలి)

Yet, it is more than an ordinary nickname, because a sobriquet gives a specific description of a person, place or thing. For example, when you hear someone say "People's president". you instantly know that he is talking about A P J Abdul kalam. This is not mere making fun of the someone whom ever you want sobriquets are a more refined form of nicknames. sobriquet is originally a French term. In this page I will give you some famous sobriquets and its description.

Land of Golden pagodas[edit source]

It is a sobriquet for a fascinating land with a landscape that is dominated by pagodas. Except Myanmar you can not find so many pagodas that represent the devotion of a people to their religion, which is Buddhism. To show the existence of Buddhists they have constructed many pagodas, most of the pagodas are coated in gold leaf, so that they glitter and gleam in the tropical sun. The most famous of them is the Shwedagon Pagoda with its gilded Stupa.

Land of raising sun[edit source]

This is a well known sobriquet to everyone, it is a sobriquet for an island in the Pacific ocean, lies in Far East. The ancient Japanese in Japan knew about china and Korea, but they did not know of any land east of their islands. They believed theirs was the first land awakened by the rising sun, and called their land awakened by the rising sun, and called their land as Nippon, (the sun's origin) from then the sobriquet has raised.

Roof of the world[edit source]

It's again a familiar sobriquet to the world since, its a roof of it. The soaring Pamir Mountains in Central Asia (Tibet) form an almost quadrangular shape, it mark the southern boundary of Central Asia, the most fascinating region in the Eurasian continent. Although the highest peaks in the world are in Himalayas [K2] the Persians called the Pamirs as "Roof of the world"

Sugar bowl of the world[edit source]

Its a sobriquet for the island lies in the Caribbena sea ( USA COAST). It was discovered by Christopher Columbus and named as Cuba it was a colony of Spain until it became an independent nation. Today it is the only country in the continent of America where the Communists are in Power. It is an agricultural country, and its main crop is Sugar cane, which is the major producer of sugar. Hence it got the sobriquet.

Lady with Lamp[edit source]

Florence Nightingale is one of the legends in the field of medical care and treatment. She lived in England during the reign of Queen Victoria. She was a leader of nursing reform, and a pioneering social reformer as well. During the Cremian war (October 1853 - February 1856 ) Florence Nightingale organized a corp of nurses that saved many lives. Holding a lamp, she would visit the sick, wounded and dying soldiers every night, to care for, and to comfort them. From then she named as Lady with Lamp.

Scotland of India[edit source]

This is the sobriquet for the one of tranquil places in Karnataka Coorg a place in Kodagu district in Karnataka, is a mountainous, misty and cool region, which has high lands and valleys, very similar in appearance to the rugged landscape of Scotland, in Great Britain.

In fact, there is a belief that Scots were the first foreigners to settle in Coorg. They were planters who ran large coffee restates before 1947.

Pink city[edit source]

This sobriquet I need not to make familiarize you as it is one among the familiar one in India. Jaipur, the capital of Rajasthan, It was built in 1727, by Maharaja sawai jai singh II. All the buildings in the city were built of pink sandstone. Later, in 1876, Queen victoria visited the city along with her husband, the Prince of Wales. To welcome his royal guests, the Maharaja painted the whole city pink, because pink is the colour of hospitality, from then it named as pink city.

Steel city[edit source]

This is the sobriquet for Jamshedpur in Jharkhand. This is the first planned industrial city in India, was founded by Jamstji Nusserwanji Tata. At the beginning of the 20th century, the Tats wanted to build a steel plant in India. A village called Sakchi was decided upon as a good location for the plant, which included buildings, hospitals, parks as Tata insisted this village took shape. It became city with all comforts.

Since, the city has formed due to the Steel plant this city named as Steel city.

Mahatma[edit source]

This is the sobriquet given to Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi who is one of the greatest leaders mankind has seen. He is the father of our nation, and was the guiding light for civil rights movements all over the world. His principles of non-violence and civil disobedience became preachings for many people who yearned for freedom from the colonial powers. The word "Mahatma" is Sanskrit for ''Great soul". It bestowed on Gandhiji in 1915 by the poet and Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore. The title is an apt one, for Mahatma Gandhi's integrity of character, purity of thoughts, and nobility of actions have indeed made him a great soul.

Gurudev[edit source]

Rabindranath Tagore was an Extraordinary person. He was a prolific writer with over 3000 poems, 2000 songs, 8 novels, 40 volumes of essays and short stories, as well as 50 plays to his credit.

He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature for his collection of well known poems titled (గీతాంజలి) 'Gitanjali'. Tagore supported the Swadeshi movement. He was a true patriot, supporting the national movement, and writing the lyrics of the 'Jana Gana Mana', which is India's national anthem. Mahatma Gandhi was the first person to call him Gurudev, and the nation still refers to him lovingly by this title.
