Open Interviews – Opening Qualitative Interview Research[edit | edit source]

Project Description[edit | edit source]

Interviews are among the most used methods and sources of research in the humanities, cultural studies and social sciences. In contrast to the current practice of dealing with interviews, opening up interview data and the research process offers the potential to improve confirmability and subsequent use as well as the collaboration of scholars. Interview data (audio and video recordings, transcripts) are currently mostly kept by the researchers themselves who carried out the relevant study or preserved in archives that can only be used on-site. Making interviews available for fellow researchers, helps to better understand and criticise the relevant studies, and it also supports the use of that material for other research questions and projects. In addition, open online analysis environments offer diverse opportunities for researchers to collaborate, as well as possibilities for studies in the field of digital humanities. The project wants to open up qualitative interview research in the humanities, cultural studies and social sciences, at the level of scientists and teams of researchers as well as at the level of research infrastructures. It proceeds in several steps: First, I want to identify obstacles that prevent scholars in the fields of humanities, cultural studies and social science from making interviews freely accessible. Second, I will develop OER information material that will help them to openly conduct research (from planning and implementation to transcription, evaluation, publication and archiving). My project will therefore include interviews with scientists, staff members of archives and research facilities, and experts. The audio and video recordings as well as the transcripts of the interviews and the OER materials, that will be created as part of the project, will be licensed as freely as possible, made available online and reusable. The results of this project will be published in open access publications.
