Abstract
Abstract The main objective of the session is to analyze the role of Wikimedia Ukraine in supporting educators and scholars in times of war through innovative campaigns, communication tools, etc. It will focus on their impact on the educational and scientific process. Wikimedia Ukraine has successfully adapted its initiatives to the conditions of war, by organizing online resources for educators and scholars, providing technical support to improve educational processes and research, and the creation of content that meets needs in the context of war. One of the important Wikimedia Ukraine's activities is communication and involvement of women in Wiki projects, in particular female educators. The organization developed a comprehensive distance learning infrastructure, including the online course "Wikipedia for Learning" which graduated 1,690 participants in a year, a dedicated chat for 130+ educators, and 20 video tutorials about Wikipedia and Wiki projects. In 2024-2025, Wikimedia Ukraine organized a hybrid conference for Wiki community educators (more than 70 participants joined online; 25 in person), an in-depth training for 15 educators from different regions of Ukraine who already use Wikimedia projects in educational activities, regular events with scholars researching Wikipedia and other Wiki projects, two Wiki schools, and specialized courses like "Wikipedia for 55+" and "Wikipedia for Neurodiverse People." The organization implemented contest-based learning approaches: "Wikipedia for School 2024" engaged 33 participants who created 250 new and improved articles on school curriculum topics, and the "Science Photo Competition" attracted 72 contestants who uploaded 470 images in 2024. With the support of Wikimedia Ukraine, some educators and scholars can continue their work even during the war, maintaining access to important information and creating new knowledge. However, there were also cases when educators who are not experienced Wikipedia editors ineffectively use Wikipedia tools for the educational process. Wikimedia Ukraine's efforts are aimed at reducing these cases by offering training to educators, providing souvenirs for active participation and certificates based on completed homework to incentivize proper engagement with the platform.
