Abstract

Abstract In this hands-on workshop, participants will first learn the fundamentals of the global copyright system, the public domain, and the different licenses and legal tools available through Creative Commons. Then, all will be encouraged to apply these concepts by creating their own collections, adaptations, or remixes of open education or open culture materials to create their own new educational works. Participants will practice finding open materials, providing proper attribution for works that are being used or reused, and applying a Creative Commons license to their own original creations. Along the way, we will discuss best practices for using openly-licensed works in educational curricula and for skills development, with concrete examples of OER efforts across global institutions and in partnership with Creative Commons.
