Weblearning
Hello Current and future Wikipedian's. Welcome to my Wikiversity page. This is an initiative to open up the sum of all knowledge and build stuff with Wikidata. For example.
- an OER metadata map populated with information on Wikidata.
- an isitihakazelo inspired family tree using Commons
- a wikipedia page about your university in your vernacular language
Background
[edit | edit source]Weblearning is a small open education consultancy that is run by me, Derek Moore. This project seeks to provide a set of starting points or guides so that you might leverage Wikidata to build open stuff.
My work with Wikimedia comes out of my involvement in SADiLaR’s DH-OER initiative. I helped a number of academics to complete their DH-OER projects at the end of 2023. One of the major roadblocks in project completion was the lack of available digital infrastructure.
At that time, I was suggesting that projects should be stored on institutional repositories and I was not sufficiently familiar with Wikidata to leverage its metadata, to make the DH-OER projects more citable and accessible. Neither did I connect academic institutions with metadata and related repositories. At project end, there was no national dataset or a map of it's constiuent champions. Just a Wikipedia page. Today DH OER does have an English Wikipedia page and four accompanying vernacular language versions. However the Wikidata information is lacking and projects need better metadata if they are to be found and re-used.
