Eventsource[edit source]

Hi Greg (and @Dave Braunschweig:)! I just looked at Eventmath and Talk:Eventmath. Two items:

  1. The fact that you will be holding synchronous workshops is sufficient for me to wish to attend your online (synchronous) meetings. Let me know when they happen.
  2. I looked at Talk:Eventmath and would be willing to make the color scheme more readable, if you want me to.
Yours truly, --Guy vandegrift (discusscontribs) 02:39, 21 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @Guy vandegrift!
  1. That would be great! We don't have a date set for the workshops yet. We may set up a mailing list in the future, but for now, we have this Google Form to help us organize the contact information and interests of the Eventmath community. We'll send out workshop dates to everyone who fills out the form. If you'd prefer that we contact you in a different way, just let us know!
  2. Thanks for offering to help with the color scheme :) After a bit more reading about interface design, I might like to either reduce the number of tabs, or group the tabs by color. We'd also like the color scheme to be compatible with the logo, and ideally, we'd like the active and inactive tabs to be very easy to distinguish. Our proposal places an emphasis on having a well-structured portal with a good user experience, so we want to be particularly thoughtful about this. Brendan and I will be discussing it tomorrow. In the meantime, would you be able to describe the solution you have in mind? I'm pretty familiar with HTML/CSS/JS but am still learning the ropes on issues specific to MediaWiki software. If it's easier, we can let you know when we have a more stable idea about the final interface.
Thanks for the help!

I just filled out the Google Form. My recommended reform on you interface was minimalistic: I had trouble reading the print on the dark tabs-- it looks as if you chose to shades of dark blue for the text and background. I was going to change one of those colors. (See for example special:permalink/2320060--Guy vandegrift (discusscontribs) 03:36, 21 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, perfect. Thanks for filling out the form!
Yep, that's definitely the main design issue right now. The labels on the dark tabs should be white (see the table from the Project impact section of the grant proposal for an example of this color scheme). The trouble is, the default color for the labels is dark blue, and I am still sorting out how best to change that. The tabs template that we're using has parameters for some CSS style customizations (such as the background color for the tabs), but it doesn't have a parameter for the color of the tab labels. Do you know how you would change the label color?
In the end, we might change the background color, which is easier, although the current color scheme has a couple of advantages: (1) it makes the active and inactive tabs very easy to distinguish, hopefully even for color blind people (we can check on that), and (2) it's consistent with the main Eventmath logo colors, which improves recognition among users and builds familiarity, so that users visiting from outside Wikiversity feel comfortable and know they're in the right place. If we need to go this route, I'll have to think more about which background color to choose, but hopefully we can just change the label color. In any case, thanks for your help! --Greg at Higher Math Help (discusscontribs) 04:18, 21 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
To create special:permalink/2320060 I just changed one of the two colors in the template. --Guy vandegrift (discusscontribs) 04:49, 21 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
That makes sense. The difficulty is that we'd like to style the label text, rather than the background color of the tabs. Styling the labels is harder to do because of the way the template is set up, but it would be preferable. We'll see if we can sort it out. --Greg at Higher Math Help (discusscontribs) 05:05, 21 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
