Wikiversity Categories[edit]

Three years ago we initiated a review of Wikiversity categories. See Wikiversity:Category Review. In particular, review the page history, and the thousands of unused categories that were removed. On average, fewer than 100 Wikiversity categories are viewed on a daily basis. Adding more categories isn't adding value. It's just making more maintenance work for someone later who will need to clean it up again.

Similarly, your recent category contributions on Open Educational Practices are category spamming. Open Educational Practices is a course. That's why it's title case. The course category is part of Category:Open education. It is not open educational resources. There is one lesson that is OER, but the rest is not.

Traditionally, Wikiversity categories have been organized in a hierarchy sequence rather than putting pages in multiple overlapping categories at different levels in the same hierarchy. Before continuing with your efforts, we need community consensus on your vision for category creation and category use. I'll run a Category Review update for current statistics. -- Dave Braunschweig (discusscontribs) 03:47, 28 April 2019 (UTC)

I have been reviewing the categories you have created and found that they are causing a maintenance problem. Categories represent a hierarchy, and pages should be placed in the most specific categories to which they belong. Categories should never create a circular hierarchy, and categories should not be duplicated. For example, garments and clothes are the same thing. According to Wikipedia, Clothes is the preferred term. Garment redirects to Clothing. Clothing is made out of Textiles, and Textiles are Materials.

Going forward, any categories you wish to create must come from:

If the category is not listed in one of those sources, what you are trying to create is too specific for how categories are used at Wikiversity. A separate discussion will be initiated at Wikiversity:Requests for Deletion regarding existing pages and category usage. Please comment there. -- Dave Braunschweig (discusscontribs) 18:50, 28 April 2019 (UTC)

Combining Pages[edit]

Per Wikiversity:Requests for Deletion, the English-Chinese learning project is appreciated, but must be redesigned to be more manageable and support structured learning. You must stop creating new pages in this project and instead focus on combining concepts together. How you choose to combine concepts is up to you, but the scope of the project needs to be reduced from 2,800 pages to under 100. See English-Chinese/Music for one possible approach. There are certainly other possibilities as well. Let me know if you have any questions. -- Dave Braunschweig (discusscontribs) 13:11, 6 May 2019 (UTC)

Reminder, per Wikiversity:Requests for Deletion, the English-Chinese learning project is appreciated, but must be redesigned to be more manageable and support structured learning. You must stop creating new pages in this project and instead focus on combining concepts together. How you choose to combine concepts is up to you, but the scope of the project needs to be reduced from 2,800 pages to under 100. If you continue creating pages rather than reorganizing existing content, your account will be blocked. Let me know if you have any questions. -- Dave Braunschweig (discusscontribs) 01:16, 25 September 2019 (UTC)

English-Pinyin[edit]

Please complete your work on consolidating English-Chinese before creating additional content.

When you do add to English-Pinyin, the same requirements will apply. For example, English-Pinyin/Astronomical object may be any body or structure in the observable universe is not consistent with Wikiversity:Naming conventions, and the page lengths of these recent contributions are not consistent with community consensus as documented at Wikiversity:Requests for Deletion/Archives/16#English-Chinese. They need to be combined or deleted. Let me know if you have any questions. -- Dave Braunschweig (discusscontribs) 20:40, 4 June 2019 (UTC)
