- Caputo, Philip J. A rumor of war. New York: Henry Holt and Company, LLC, 1977. Print.
A marine lieutenant by the name of Philip J. Caputo landed at Danang with the first ground combat unit committed to fight in Vietnam in 1965. After having served on the line in one of modern history's ugliest wars, he returned home, physically whole but emotionally wasted, his youthful idealism forever gone. A decade after leaving Vietnam, Caputo wrote this book, which he said was "simply a story about war, about the things men do in war and the things war does to them."
"It has nothing to do with politics, power, strategy, influence, national interests, or foreign policy; nor is it an indictment of the great men who led us into Indochina and whose mistakes were paid for with the blood of some quite ordinary men." (xiii).
"In a general sense, it is simply a story about war, about the things men do in war and the things war does to them." (xiii).
