# Tangent ratio

All calculations are being done a Texas Instruments TI-30XIIS calculator.

Trigonometry is the study of the relationships among the sides and angles of triangles. One such relationship is the tangent ratio, which is an example of a trigonometric ratio.

Example 1 Find the tangent ratio, to 3 decimal places, for each angle.

a) ${\displaystyle 40degrees}$
b) ${\displaystyle 55degrees}$
c) ${\displaystyle 73degrees}$
d) ${\displaystyle 89degrees}$

Solution

a) ${\displaystyle tan40degreesapproximatelyequalto0.839}$
b) ${\displaystyle tan55degreesapproximatelyequalto1.428}$
c) ${\displaystyle tan73degreesapproximatelyequalto3.271}$
d) ${\displaystyle tan89degreesapproximatelyequalto57.290}$
