Costume at the Duchess of Devonshire's 2 July 1897 Fancy-dress Ball[edit | edit source]

At the Duchess of Devonshire's fancy-dress ball, Lady Constance Scott (at 26), at 20 years old, was dressed

  • "as a Watteau shepherdess, in black silk, trimmed with pink roses."[2]:7, Col. 7a

This description from the Morning Post describes a black silk dress, but her portrait shows her dressed in a light-colored dress.

John Thomson's portrait of "Lady Constance Anne Cairns (née Montagu-Douglas-Scott) as a Shepherdess" in costume is photogravure #89 in the album presented to the Duchess of Devonshire and now in the National Portrait Gallery.[3] The printing on the portrait says, "Lady Constance Scott as a Shepherdess," with a Long S in Shepherdess.[4]

The Duke of Buccleuch is at 20, the Duchess at 24. The "Ladies Scot" are listed in the Times as having attended with the Duke and Duchess of Buccleuch[5]; Lady Katharine Scott is at 25. The Duke was not seated at dinner?
