The history of the People's Republic of China started on 1 October, 1949, when, after the near complete victory by the Chinese Communist Party in the Chinese Civil War, Mao Zedong declared the foundation atop Tiananmen.

The PRC history can be divided into four sub-divisions: the Mao era (1949-76), the Deng and Reforms era (1976-89), the Jiang era (1989-2002), and the 'recent' era (2002-present). And there have been five generations of leadership: Mao Zedong, Deng Xiaoping, Jiang Zemin, Hu Jintao and Xi Jinping.
