Pure-quadratic polynomial/R/2 variables/Standard form/1/Example

From Wikiversity

We consider the pure-quadratic polynomial

F=3X24XY+5Y2.

In order to apply fact, we have to find the eigenvalues of the matrix

M=(3225).

The characteristic polynomial is

(X3)(X5)4=X28X+11=(X4)25.

Therefore, the eigenvalues are

x1=5+4 and x2=5+4.

Therefore, in a suitable orthonormal basis, the polynomial has the form

F=(5+4)U2+(5+4)V2.
