Connectomics Lab[edit | edit source]

Although Cyto-Architectonics techniques like stains of the Myelin coated axons made tight connections within the laminae of the cortex visible, there really was no intimation that there was a backbone network that passed down the center-line in each hemisphere, and connected modular storage units in the cortex to the ACC until DSI became practical.

DSI seems to be very good at seeing the gross structure of the networks in the brain, while cyto-architectonic staining techniques help find the finer structures. It is to be hoped that MDI staining techniques that detect myelin sheaths can be defined to capture the detail in the midrange between MRI resolution and Electron Microscopy.
