Progress through the journey to completing an OnPhD will be recognized through may approaches and events. many of the milestones toward completion will be complimented with being awarded an Open Badge.

Badge System Design[edit | edit source]

Currently we are designing the badge system for the Open and Networked PhD, and given the network nature of our effort we hope to conclude a collaboration in the badge system design. Feel free to join in and contribute!

Description[edit | edit source]

Should include "Open and Network Doctor of Philosophy"

Leveling and badge color[edit | edit source]

I like the martial arts belt colors to denote level within progress toward completion. It is a globally recognized color scheme that indicates progress toward mastery. Has no top end once mastery is attained; Dan levels (therefore, we can recognize post-doc related stuff).

  • Begining tasks like taking courses, learning new skills, cross-discipline studies, etc... would be yellow and orange badges.
  • Developing thesis, gather data, researching, teaching, facilitating, higher level coursework, etc... would be blue, green, and purple badges.
  • Tasks demonstrating mastery, completing thesis, presenting at conferences, guest writing, commentary, mentoring others, post-doc, etc... would be brown, black, and red badges.

Shapes[edit | edit source]

Any shape would work in my opinion as long as the description and leveling color practices are followed.

Font[edit | edit source]

Good question. What should our font be?

Icons[edit | edit source]

Any icons embedded in the badge would work in my opinion as long as the description and leveling color practices are followed.

Badge Options[edit | edit source]

I built this badge for the following reasons;

  1. Color shows badge is for introductory level task
  2. I like round badges
  3. Icon is a globe from the noun project
  4. Text clearly denotes it as a OnPhD Candidate badge.
  5. From a rubric perspective, I'm following this kind of approach; http://en.wikiversity.org/wiki/MWA/Badges

Deployment[edit | edit source]

The whole badge system will be deployed through a number of issuers (its the cluster of badges that will matter in the end). This initial OnPhD Candidate challenge will be deloyed as a P2PU challenge. And the badge will be awarded upon completion of the challenge; https://p2pu.org/en/groups/onphd-candidacy/
