From Wikiversity
Charismatic leadership and follower motivation:
How does charismatic leadership inspire follower motivation?

Overview

[edit | edit source]
Figure 1. The soccer team you have just been named captain of.
Imagine this...

You have just been named captain of your soccer team (see Figure 1), but this is the first time you have been put in a position like this. You have always been told that you are rather charismatic, and you have heard of this thing called charismatic leadership. Is there a way you can use this apparent charisma you have and turn it into charismatic leadership to help rally your team so you can win?

  • It is important for a good leader to know how to inspire motivation in their followers
  • Charisma is often talked about as an effective tool utilised by many of the world's most successful leaders
  • It is therefore important to understand the role that charisma plays in leadership and how it can be utilised to inspire follower motivation

I'm just going to make this note here (it will be removed before actual book chapter submission), but I have left a lot of the template stuff in for now, purely because I don't want to risk losing it/not being able to refer back to it. It will just be easier for me to refer back to it whilst working on the book chapter if I ever need to if it's still here, but all of my Topic Development content should be in here. I'm just putting this note here in case there is any confusion about why there is so much of the template still left.

The Overview section should provide:

  1. Scenario: A short, engaging case study or real-world example in a feature box, with an accompanying image (see above)
  2. Explanation of the problem, issue, or topic: Briefly explain the problem, why it is important, and outline how psychological science can help
  3. Focus questions: Unpack the sub-title into focus questions in a feature box

Recommended length: 180 to 330 words.

This template provides key headings, examples, and tips for each section. Gradually remove this generic information as the chapter develops. It is OK to retain some of the template material for the topic development, but it should all be removed for the final book chapter.

Key resources:

Focus questions

  • What is charismatic leadership?
  • How do followers' traits influence the effects of charismatic leadership?
  • How do traits of the leader influence the effects of charismatic leadership?

Headings

[edit | edit source]

Use this heading structure:

  • Overview
  • 3 to 6 major headings tailored to the topic; can have sub-headings, but:
    • avoid having only one sub-heading
    • provide an introductory paragraph before breaking into sub-sections
  • Conclusion
  • See also
  • References
  • External links

What is charismatic leadership?

[edit | edit source]
  • Charismatic leadership is often stated to improve follower motivation, but is often ill-defined (Antonakis et al., 2021; Sy et al., 2018)
  • Charismatic speeches have been found to significantly increase both worker output and public good contributions comparative to "standard" speeches, although dependent on social context (Antonakis et al., 2021)
  • Development of a theoretical model to understand charismatic leadership in the Elicit-Channel (EC) model, charismatic relationship = five-step cyclical process (Sy et al., 2018)
  • Both charismatic and integrative (combined charismatic and individualised consideration) leadership messages have been found to be beneficial for collective follower self-concept, supporting a self-concept-based theory of charismatic leadership (Paul et al., 2001)

Follower traits and charismatic leadership

[edit | edit source]
  • Charismatic leadership has been found to positively influence both employees' perceived support and employees' goal-directed energy (Yan et al., 2025)
  • Perceived support of employees has been found to mediate the relationship between charismatic leadership and employees' goal-directed energy (Yan et al., 2025)
  • Although, duration under current tenure has been found to negatively moderate both charismatic leadership and employees' perceived support (Yan et al., 2025)

Leader traits and charismatic leadership

[edit | edit source]
  • Followers' prosocial motivation is positively influenced by charismatic leadership when abusive supervision is low, but not when abusive supervision is high (Christensen-Salem et al., 2024)
  • Follower prosocial motivation was found to be a mediating factor between organisational citizenship behaviour and charismatic leadership, when abusive supervision is low, but not when abusive supervision is high (Christensen-Salem et al., 2024)
  • The importance of value congruence between followers and a socialised charismatic leader, values have also been found to be occupation-linked (Brown & Treviño, 2009)

Key points

[edit | edit source]

For the topic development, for each heading and sub-heading:

  • Provide at least three bullet-points, including for the Overview and Conclusion
  • Include key citations

Figures

[edit | edit source]
Figure 2. Example of an image with a descriptive caption.
  • Use figures to illustrate concepts, add interest, and to serve as examples
  • Figures can show photos, diagrams, graphs, video, audio, etc.
  • Embed figures throughout the chapter, starting with the scenario in the Overview section
  • Caption figures (use Figure #. and explain the relevance of the image to the text)
  • Images must be embedded from Wikimedia Commons
  • Images can be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons if they are openly licensed
  • Cite each figure at least once in the main text (e.g., see Figure 2)

Learning features

[edit | edit source]

Interactive learning features help to bring book chapters to life and can be embedded throughout the chapter.

Scenarios
  • Scenarios, case studies, or examples describe concepts in action
  • Can be real or fictional; if real, provide citations
  • Can be split into multiple boxes throughout a chapter (e.g., to illustrate different theories or stages)
  • Present using feature boxes

Feature boxes
  • Highlight key content using feature boxes, but don't overuse, otherwise they lose their effect
  • Consider using feature boxes for:
    • Scenarios, case studies, or examples
    • Focus questions
    • Tips
    • Quiz questions
    • Take-home messages
Embedded links
  • When key words are introduced, use interwiki links to:
    • Wikipedia articles (e.g., "An early psychological view dreams) of dreams was provided by Sigmund Freud") or
    • Related book chapters (e.g., "If you're feeling stuck, check out the chapter about writer's block")

Tables
  • Use to tables to organise and summarise information
  • Cite each table at least once in the main text (e.g., see Table 1)
  • Tables should be captioned
  • More example tables which can be adapted

Table 1

A Descriptive Caption Which Explains The Table Contents and its Relevance to the Text e.g.,

The 2 x 2 Johari Window Model Showing Knowing x Self/Other

Known to self Not known to self
Known to others Open area Blind spot
Not known to others Hidden area Unknown
Quizzes
  • Using one or two quiz questions for each main section is better than a long quiz at the end
  • Quiz conceptual understanding, rather than trivia. Ask about important information such as take-home messages
  • Ask easy rather than hard questions
  • Different types of quiz questions are possible; see Quiz

Example simple quiz questions. Choose your answers and click "Submit":

1

How many steps are in the cyclical process of the Elicit-Channel (EC) model of charismatic leadership?

3
4
5
6

2

Charismatic leadership has been found to ______ influence both employees' perceived support and employees' goal-directed energy:

Positively
Negatively

3

Followers' prosocial motivation is positively influenced by charismatic leadership when abusive supervision is _____:

high
low

Conclusion

[edit | edit source]
  • Charismatic leadership is often talked about, but typically not so well-defined, although more specific models and studies are being done in more recent years (Antonakis et al., 2021; Sy et al., 2018)
  • Charismatic and integrative leadership messages have both been found to be beneficial for follower self-concept (Paul et al., 2001)
  • Traits relating to both followers and charismatic leaders have been found to influence the effects of charismatic leadership in various ways (Brown & Treviño, 2009; Christensen-Salem et al., 2024; Yan et al., 2025)

  • The Conclusion is arguably the most important section
  • Draft clear take-home message(s), even at the topic development stage
  • Together, the Overview and Conclusion should summarise the problem, its significance, and how psychological science contributes to understanding and addressing it
  • Recommended length: 150 to 330 words

Suggestions for this section:

  • What is the answer to the sub-title question based on psychological theory and research?
  • What are the answers to the focus questions?
  • What are the practical, take-home messages?
