Two of your colleagues, Alice and John have been assigned to a major project. One is detail-oriented and focused on accuracy, while the other prioritises speed and meeting deadlines. They have never worked together before, yet both hope to excel in the project and earn a big bonus. How will their interactions while working together impact whether they successfully achieve their goals? This is where transactive goal dynamics theory can help (see Figure 1) (Fitzsimons et al., 2015).

Goal processes, motivation and self-regulation do not occur in isolation but unfold within a complex web of social relationships, where others' goals and actions continuously intersect with our own. These interactions between the self and others are not incidental, but rather fundamental to motivating goal pursuit (Fitzsimons & Finkel, 2018). Transactive goal dynamics (TGD) theory helps to explain what happens when people in close relationships set and pursue goals that are affected by interpersonal interactions (Fitzsimons et al., 2015). TGD theory outlines key constructs explaining why some partnerships thrive in joint goal pursuit while others struggle, and examines the underlying aspects of interdependence and relationship influence on motivation across diverse relational contexts and practical settings (Fitzsimons & Finkel, 2018).

Transactive goal dynamics theory

Transactive goal dynamics theory, proposed by Fitzsimons et al. (2015), states that two or more people can function as a single self-regulating system through goal interdependence, with each partner pooling goal-relevant self-regulatory resources such as time, energy, or skills (see Figure 2). This structure, named a transactive goal system, reflects the dynamic coordination of goals, pursuits, and outcomes, where each partner’s actions influence the other’s goals (Fitzsimons et al., 2015). Although TGD processes can occur in various relationships, including acquaintances, they are most relevant to close relationships such as coworkers, friends, family, and romantic partners (Fitzsimons et al., 2015). A TGD group is one in which every group member has interdependence with all other members on at least one goal (Fitzsimons et al., 2015). In group contexts, the goals, strategies, resources and outcomes of each partner become so intertwined that individuals function as components of a dynamic network (Fitzsimons et al., 2015).

Theoretical origins

Transactive goal dynamics theory challenges the notion that individuals are independent agents in goal pursuit, emphasising goal co-regulation within dyads and teams (Fitzsimons et al., 2015; Fitzsimons et al., 2016). TGD builds upon several earlier frameworks. Interdependence theory (Thibaut & Kelley, 1959) laid the foundation for understanding networks of influence in social interactions. Research on transactive memory (Wegner, 1987) introduced the idea that close partners can share cognitive processes to form a cross-partner system, a concept extended in TGD to self-regulatory resources. Steiner’s (1972) concepts of process gain and loss were adapted to interpret goal-related outcomes, described in TGD as transactive gain and loss (Fitzsimons et al., 2015). Finally, self-determination theory (Deci & Ryan, 2013) highlights social connection as a key influence on motivation, shaping goal behaviour, paralleling TGD’s focus on interdependence for motivating goal pursuit.

TGD goal structures

TGD theory outlines three core variables that define how goals operate within interdependent transactive goal systems (Fitzsimons et al., 2015):

  1. Who possesses the goal – does the goal belong to the self, the partner, or both.
  2. Who is the target of the goal – does the outcome concern the self, the partner, or both.
  3. Who pursues the goal – whether the self, the partner, or both engage in the pursuit.

These variables highlight that goals are not fixed to a single individual, instead, they are shared and coordinated within a dynamic system (Finkel et al., 2016). Partners can possess, target, and pursue one another’s goals, even if they do not personally value them, demonstrating the fundamentally interdependent nature of motivation in close relationships (Fitzsimons et al., 2015). Based on these variables, TGD theory distinguishes several common goal types, shown in Table 1, using dyad definitions (Fitzsimons et al., 2015).

In TGD theory, transactive density refers to the degree of interdependence between partners, defined by both the number and strength of cross-partner connections (see Figure 3) (Fitzsimons et al., 2015). In low-density systems, partners have limited influence on one another’s goals, pursuits and outcomes, whereas high-density systems are characterised by frequent, strong reciprocal links (Fitzsimons et al., 2015). People with the opportunity and the desire for partnership are more likely to form highly dense relationships (Fitzsimons & Finkel, 2018). Transactive density also predicts how individuals adapt once systems dissolve, a process called goal recovery (Fitzsimons et al., 2015). After dissolution, individuals from high-density systems experience disrupted motivation and poorer goal outcomes, whereas those from low-density systems often recover more quickly (Fitzsimons & Finkel, 2018).

Transactive gain and loss

Transactive gain and loss assess the success or failure of outcomes when partners work as a TGD system compared to what they would achieve individually (Fitzsimons et al., 2015). Transactive gain occurs when systems achieve better outcomes together than alone, while transactive loss occurs when joint outcomes are worse (Fitzsimons et al., 2015). Whether a dyad or group experiences gain or loss depends largely on the efficiency of goal coordination and how shared resources are managed and integrated (Fitzsimons et al., 2015). TGD theory further suggests that these outcomes predict relationship persistence: systems that consistently generate gain are more likely to endure, while repeated loss increases goal conflict and the likelihood of dissolution (Fitzsimons et al., 2015). Research also indicates that when individuals perceive their partners as instrumental in achieving important goals, the resulting satisfaction and positive outcomes enhance relationship closeness and reinforce motivation pursue goals (Fitzsimons & Finkel, 2018).

If coworkers Alice and John were to work independently, each would contribute 100 units of success, for a combined total of 200. Over two weeks of collaboration, with Alice double-checking critical details and John keeping tasks on schedule, they begin coordinating efficiently, forming a high-density transactive goal system (see Figure 4). Their joint effort produces 250 units of success, a transactive gain, illustrating how effective interdependence can yield greater outcomes than working separately. Beyond the current project, TGD theory suggests this experience will predict their relationship persistence, as the having worked well together, Alice and John become more motivated to collaborate again, now with greater confidence in leveraging each other’s strengths to achieve successful outcomes.

Fitzsimons et al. (2015) proposed six key tenets of goal interdependence, outlining how interdependence is formed, how positive goal outcomes are achieved, and how goal interdependence shapes the relationship itself (see Figure 5). Tenets 1 and 2 describe the nature of interdependence within transactive goal systems, while tenets 3 to 6 focus on predicting goal and relationship outcomes (see Table 2) (Fitzsimons et al., 2015). Together, these tenets highlight the core mechanisms of TGD theory and how they interact to guide relational goal pursuit.

Transactive goal dynamics theory and motivation

Transactive goal dynamics theory explains motivation by highlighting how interdependence between partners or team members increases effort, coordination and persistence (Fitzsimons et al., 2015). TGD proposes that motivation in goal processes is influenced by goal-general constructs (see Table 3) (Finkel et al., 2016). Together, these constructs clarify why some partnerships achieve strong transactive gains through increased motivation and persistence in goal pursuit, whereas others experience transactive loss when motivation or coordination breaks down (Finkel et al., 2016). Consequently, TGD theory impacts motivation by facilitating the sustained and successful pursuit of coordinated goals (Fitzsimons et al., 2015).

TGD theory frames resource pooling as the mechanism through which individual goals transform into system-level outcomes (Fitzsimons et al., 2015). The amount of goal-relevant resources is a central motivator in goal pursuit and outcomes (Finkel et al., 2016). Resource abundance allows partners to support both self and partner-oriented goals, while scarcity heightens competition and conflict between partners, decreasing motivated goal pursuit (Finkel et al., 2016).

Supporting this, Kornblum et al. (2021) used a TGD perspective to demonstrate that romantic relationships of 108 German politicians facilitated career goal attainment through increased pooled resources and shared goals (see Figure 6). Partners who supported one another’s career goals reported greater resource availability, promoting goal persistence and progress (Kornblum et al., 2021). However, this study relies on cross-sectional self-reports, risking confounding explanations such as retrospectively reporting higher resource sharing (Kornblum et al., 2021). Despite limitations, these findings suggest that motivation in high-density systems is amplified through the expansion of available resources, extending TGD theory’s utility to real-world, high-stakes contexts such as careers.

Efficient coordination of pooled resources

Efficient coordination of goal-relevant resources is critical to motivation in TGD, with transactive density predicting how readily partners can use resources, including transferring knowledge, dividing labour, and coordinating efforts (Fitzsimons et al., 2015). Experimental research shows that interdependent dyads allocate tasks more effectively, coordinating to each other’s skills and preferences, which explains subsequent higher goal performances (see Figure 6) (vanDellen et al., 2025). This research suggests that efficient coordination in high-density systems can increase goal success, which in turn increases self-efficacy and reinforces motivation for goal pursuit (Bandura, 1997). Applying this to goal pursuit in real-world settings, organisations can increase transactive density and train coordination skills to reduce inefficiencies, while clinicians can help couples or families identify strengths and design strategies that preserve autonomy while leveraging shared resources. TGD benefits therefore depend on both transactive density and functional coordination to motivate goal progress.

Duration, closeness and familiarity of relationships

TGD theory highlights that motivation in goal pursuit is shaped by relationships qualities, seen in closeness, duration and familiarity of partners (Finkel et al., 2016; Fitzsimons et al., 2015). Using a TGD perspective, vanDellen et al. (2025) studied American university students and found that established couples outperformed impromptu dyads on joint goals, even when they could not choose tasks, due to their familiarity with each other. Established partners also reported greater shared motivation and rated their team as more likely to perform well when working together, showing higher relationship qualities than impromptu dyads (vanDellen et al., 2025). Similarly, Kornblum et al. (2021) found that closely connected partners were more likely to adopt each other’s career goals and provide greater motivational support, but relationship length showed no significant influence on career goal success. These findings suggest that for relationship qualities, closeness and familiarity are more critical for motivating goal attainment than duration (Kornblum et al., 2021; vanDellen et al., 2025). Practically, interventions aimed at strengthening relationship qualities may enhance performance outcomes and motivate goal pursuit, even for short-term or newly formed partnerships in real-life environments such as work or education.

TGD motivation across relationship types and contexts

TGD provides theoretical insight into the social foundation of motivation and offers practical implications for designing environments that foster effective collective goal pursuit (see Figure 7) (Fitzsimons & Finkel, 2018). Within these contexts, goal-relevant orientations, including individual differences in conditions, culture, and tendencies such as personality traits, shape how partners pursue joint goals and motivate shared outcomes (Finkel et al., 2016). Fitzsimons and Finkel (2018) identified recent research across diverse domains that found evidence of processes characteristic of TGD, particularly goal interdependence, present in a wide range of real-life settings and relationship types.

Health and family dynamics

In an American obesity treatment study of 148 overweight or obese parent-child dyads, weight loss changes and unhealthy eating behaviours were strongly correlated within dyads, highlighting shared goal regulation and motivational influence within highly familiar partners (Best et al., 2016). From a TGD perspective, these findings demonstrate how family interdependence produces motivational links, where one partner’s progress or setbacks in self-regulation directly shape the other’s outcomes (Fitzsimons & Finkel, 2018). This suggests that interventions aimed at motivating health behaviour change may be more effective when framed as dyadic or family-level goals rather than individual efforts.

Career success and romantic partners

Using data from an Australian longitudinal survey of over 4,000 partners, Solomon and Jackson (2014) found that spouses’ conscientiousness predicted their partner’s job satisfaction, income, and promotion, even after accounting for participants’ own traits. This demonstrates TGD’s cross-partner influences in long-term goals for professional outcomes, showing that an individual’s motivation and achievement are partly shaped by their partner’s traits (Fitzsimons et al., 2015). Recognising the indirect influence of partner's tendencies highlights the broader social context shaping employees’ motivation and performance, suggesting that career interventions may need to consider how motivational support within intimate relationships shapes long-term success.

Education and teacher–student team dynamics

A study of 1,102 German fourth-grade teacher-students groups showed that teachers’ emotional exhaustion was significantly associated with lower student mathematics achievement, reflecting motivational interdependence between educator and learner (Klusmann et al., 2016). From a TGD perspective, the classroom can be understood as a goal system in which the teacher’s personal condition and persistence are directly linked to students’ progress, such that transactive loss can emerge when key figures in shared goal pursuit lack the capacity to sustain motivation (Fitzsimons et al., 2015). This has practical implications, as interventions aimed at teacher well-being may indirectly boost student performance by preserving the shared motivational system.

Early development and friendship dyads

Even young German children exhibit readiness for transactive processes, as 3.5-year-old familiar dyads expended effort in joint tasks to help partners complete goals, even after securing their own reward (Hamann et al., 2012). In 76% of cases, children delayed playing with their own reward to assist their partner, suggesting that goal interdependence and intrinsic motivation to support others' goals emerge in early childhood (Hamann et al., 2012). Children’s willingness to prioritise a partner’s goal completion over immediate gratification indicates early sensitivity to TGD processes of shared goals and cooperative regulation, even before learned socialisation (Fitzsimons & Finkel, 2018). This suggests that motivational interdependence may be a foundational human capacity, as educational and developmental interventions can nurture cooperative goal systems to motivate social goal pursuit and collective achievement.

Limitations and future directions

TGD theory is a recent framework, first proposed only a decade ago (Fitzsimons et al., 2015). As an emerging theory, TGD faces challenges typical of early-stage theories, including limited empirical evidence, measurement difficulties, and unclear conceptual boundaries. While early findings are promising, further development is needed to refine mechanisms and establish its applicability across contexts.

Limited research

Direct empirical research on TGD remains scarce and narrow in scope, thus existing findings are informative but insufficient to establish reliability or validity. The scarcity of research means no meta-analyses evaluate TGD, with studies even identifying TGD-like features rather than experiments explicitly grounded in the theory, limiting conclusions about its validity (Fitzsimons & Finkel, 2018). Direct TGD research has only addressed laboratory-based dyads or romantic partnerships, raising questions about TGD's generalisability to other types of relationships or broader social networks, while the limited cultural diversity in sampled populations also restricts the theory’s real-world relevance (Kornblum et al., 2021; vanDellen et al., 2025).

Measurement challenges

A key limitation of TGD research is the inconsistent operationalisation of its central constructs, such as with resources or density operational measures, identifying reliable and accurate scientific measures for all aspects of TGD theory is currently an ongoing process (Fitzsimons et al., 2016). Without precise definitions, the theory risks remaining conceptually broad but empirically underspecified. Methodologically, reliance on self-report and cross-sectional designs makes results vulnerable to bias and limits causal inference (vanDellen et al., 2025; Kornblum et al., 2021). No experimental or longitudinal studies have directly tested TGD, particularly those manipulating transactive density or tracking resources over time, which weakens TGD's conclusions. Moreover, findings from related interdependent resource theories such as transactive memory, have limited applicability to TGD due to conceptual differences (Lewis, 2004).

Conceptual boundaries

TGD has begun clarifying its integrative position relative to related theories such as self-evaluation maintenance, self-regulation, self-determination and social support (Finkel et al., 2016). However, without differentiation, the theory risks overlap with established frameworks and may lack distinct explanatory value. At the same time, some findings suggest limits to TGD’s current scope, for instance, performance benefits arising from motivational or relational factors that are not fully accounted for within TGD (Kornblum et al., 2021; vanDellen et al., 2025).


Future directions
Where to next?

Future research should examine TGD across diverse relational and cultural contexts to test the robustness and universality of its principles. Employing experimental manipulations, multi-method behavioural measures, and longitudinal designs would strengthen validity and capture the dynamic nature of goal pursuit. Research should also examine where TGD diverges or integrates with related theories, clarifying boundaries and strengthening its theoretical distinctiveness.

Conclusion

Transactive goal dynamics theory proposes that by pooling resources, coordinating efforts, and aligning goals, partners in close relationships function as a single self-regulating system, often achieving goal outcomes greater than individuals could alone (Fitzsimons et al., 2015). Key constructs such as goal coordination, transactive density, and transactive gain or loss explain why some partnerships thrive while others struggle (Fitzsimons et al., 2015). Motivation is amplified when interdependent partners have abundant shared resources, coordinate efficiently and maintain high-quality relationships (Kornblum et al., 2021; vanDellen et al., 2025). Furthermore, TGD processes emerge early in life and operate across contexts, including workplaces, education and healthcare, showing that personal orientations and collaborative interdependence enhance goal persistence, performance, and motivation (Fitzsimons & Finkel, 2018). In daily goal pursuit, recognising how TGD theory influences motivation helps people build supportive teams and relationships, leverage others' strengths, and improve task cooperation (Kornblum et al., 2021; vanDellen et al., 2025). For interpersonal development, understanding TGD processes also guides people in aligning personal goals with social contexts in ways that sustain motivation, improve performance, and strengthen long-term relational outcomes (Fitzsimons & Finkel, 2018).
