Scenario

Elise, a final-year university student, has often struggled with motivation when it comes to academic assessments. However, after receiving positive feedback on a recent group project, she experienced a noticeable shift. The recognition left her feeling joyful, proud, and deeply grateful which are emotions that were rare in her academic journey. Energised by this newfound sense of capability, Elise took a bold step outside her comfort zone and signed up for a marathon which was something she never would have considered in the past.

This chapter explores the psychology behind Elise’s experience. Specifically, it examines how positive emotional states such as joy, pride, gratitude, and hope can enhance goal pursuit by activating approach motivation. While much attention in psychology has traditionally focused on how negative emotions signal problems to avoid, research increasingly shows that positive emotions can serve as powerful drivers of action. They don’t just make us feel good but they can make us move forward.

Understanding the Psychology of Positive Emotion and Motivation

This section explores three major theoretical perspectives:

Broaden-and-Build Theory

Fredrickson’s Broaden-and-Build Theory posits that positive emotions broaden our momentary thought–action repertoires, enabling people to build long-term personal resources, such as psychological resilience, social connections, and problem-solving skills (Fredrickson, 2004).

Unlike negative emotions, which narrow focus to help us respond to threats (e.g., fight or flight), positive emotions expand cognition and attention, opening individuals up to explore, create, and take action toward goals. This broadened mindset facilitates approach-oriented behaviours, such as pursuing new challenges, engaging socially, or creatively solving problems all of which are vital for sustained goal pursuit.[factual?]

For example, someone experiencing joy after a small success might be more willing to take on a new opportunity, reframe challenges positively, or persist in the face of setbacks and behaviours that, over time, build lasting achievement.

Example: Elise felt renewed enthusiasm after receiving positive feedback. According to Broaden-and-Build, her joy triggered broadened thinking (e.g., setting clearer goals, signing up for a fitness challenge) and helped her develop coping and planning strategies that support sustained effort.

Critical Perspective:

While this theory is widely supported (Fredrickson & Joiner, 2002; Cohn et al., 2009), some critiques note it lacks a strong causal mechanism for how positivity translates to measurable goal attainment. Additionally, overly intense or inappropriate positivity can impair realistic judgement (Gruber et al., 2011), suggesting that context matters.

Reinforcement Sensitivity Theory (RST):

Gray’s Reinforcement Sensitivity Theory (RST) provides a biologically grounded framework for understanding the role of positive emotion in approach motivation. RST identifies the Behavioural Activation System (BAS) as the neural system responsible for regulating sensitivity to reward cues, which are often accompanied by positive affect (Gray, 1982; Corr, 2008).

When activated by anticipated rewards (e.g., praise, achievement, recognition), the BAS produces approach-oriented emotions such as eagerness, excitement, or pride. These feelings, in turn, motivate goal-directed behaviour, especially when goals are perceived as attainable.

Example: A student who anticipates the satisfaction of completing their thesis may feel energised and focused, fuelling consistent effort. This positive affective anticipation is underpinned by BAS activation.

Modern expansions of RST recognise that positive emotion is both a consequence and cause of BAS activation, creating feedback loops where progress toward goals generates positive affect, which in turn enhances motivation.

Self-Determination Theory (SDT):

The Self-Determination Theory (SDT) provides a robust framework for understanding how emotional states relate to intrinsic motivation such as pursuing goals for internal satisfaction rather than external rewards. According to SDT, individuals are most motivated when their needs for autonomy, competence and relatedness are met.

Positive emotions often arise when these needs are fulfilled, for example, pride when mastering a skill, or joy when connecting with others which further enhances intrinsic motivation and self-directed goal pursuit (Ryan & Deci, 2000). This reinforces a positive cycle: goal progress produces positive affect, which increases engagement and persistence.

Example: Elise's pride after a successful presentation satisfied her need for competence. This positive feeling enhanced her motivation to pursue further goals (like fitness and academic challenges) that aligned with her sense of autonomy and self-worth.

SDT also emphasises the quality of goals, intrinsically motivated goals are more likely to sustain motivation and generate positive emotion than externally imposed ones (Sheldon & Elliot, 1999). This helps explain why positive emotions are often stronger motivators than pressure, fear, or obligation.

Critical Perspective:

While SDT has strong empirical support, critics argue that it may underemphasise the role of external motivators, which can also elicit positive emotions in certain contexts (e.g., public recognition). Additionally, the model assumes a universally positive role of intrinsic motivation, which may be culturally bounded (Iyengar & DeVoe, 2003).

Empirical Evidence Linking Positive Emotion, Approach Motivation and Goal Pursuit

A growing body of research across psychology and neuroscience supports the idea that positive emotions enhance goal-directed behaviour by activating approach motivation, improving cognitive flexibility and sustaining long-term engagement. This section examines key empirical findings including longitudinal studies, experimental research and meta-analyses that clarify how and when this relationship functions effectively.

Consistent with the Broaden-and-Build Theory, several studies have demonstrated that positive affect enhances cognitive processes necessary for goal pursuit, including creativity, attention and problem-solving.

In a seminal experimental study, Isen (1987) and colleagues found that participants induced into a positive mood solved complex, insight-based problems more effectively than those in neutral or negative moods. Similarly, Estrada et al. (1997) showed that physicians in positive moods made more accurate diagnoses by incorporating more information and demonstrating greater cognitive flexibility.

However, as critics point out, SDT often underplays external rewards or culturally diverse motivations. Some studies such as Kappes et al., (2012), suggest that unrealistic optimism, even about intrinsic goals can reduce effort unless grounded in planning and contrast.

Refinement: SDT explains why meaningful goals create emotional momentum, but benefits depend on cognitive realism and alignment with values.

Ultimately, understanding the role of positive emotion in motivation offers a transformative perspective, instead of pushing ourselves out of fear, guilt, or pressure, we can learn to be pulled forward by joy, purpose, and meaning.
